Chiropractic can help recurrent ear infections by restoring normal drainage of the lymphatic vessels in the throat and neck.

Otitis media commonly results when there is improper drainage of the lymph system in the neck, or when the muscle that is supposed to keep bacteria or viruses from entering the eustacean  tubes from the back of the throat are not working correctly. This results in fluid buildup behind the eardrum, setting the stage for infection. Ear infections commonly occur after a cold, or when there is increased mucus production as result of food (such as dairy) or other environmental allergies or sensitivities. There is also increased fluid and with teething.
Adults can also get ear infections but usually do not because the shape and the length of the eustacean tubes are different than children’s. The shape of the adult’s eustacean tube allows for easier drainage which makes it more difficult for an infection to develop. Also, adults spend more time upright than young children do, which allows better drainage.

The symptoms of otits media include ear pain, fever, and irritability as result of fluid build up behind the ear drum. For many children, it can become a chronic problem, requiring treatment year after year, and can put the child at risk for permanent hearing damage and associated speech and developmental problems.

Unfortunately, the current treatment of choice for medical doctors is to prescribe oral antibiotics, usually amoxicillin, which can be helpful to get rid of a bacterial infection. But, according to many research studies, antibiotics have not been very effective in treating ear infections.

If a child continues to have recurrent infections and does not respond to antibiotic treatment, the traditional medical next step is placing ‘tubes in the ears’ to relieve the pressure, and pain of otitis media. This is a surgical procedure where a small opening is made in the eardrum and a small tube is placed in the opening. This opening helps to relieve the pressure in the ear and prevents fluid buildup. Overtime the body will push the tube out as the hole closes and heals. Although the treatment can be effective, it does not address the underlying cause of the infection.
The Chiropractic approach to painful ear infections is to restore the normal drainage of the ears and neck lymphatics. This is a more natural approach that has been done for over 100 years through Chiropractic adjustments. Allergies or sensitivities that can be increasing mucus production should also be explored.

If your child experiences recurrent ear infections talk to your Chiropractor. By helping to restore the normal function of the tissues of the neck and throat, otitis media can usually be significantly reduced or completely eliminated in most children. This is done gently and naturally, without the use of any antibiotics or surgery, with Chiropractic treatment.
